Chapter Fourteen

The ride took about twenty minutes and was up a beautiful path lined with pine trees on either side. When we reached the arena, it wasn’t what I’d expected. It looked like a colosseum, but was enclosed, with a dome shaped roof on the top.

Around the structure were tall columns that had dragons carved into them. Dragons that were similar to the ones carved into the columns on Trystan’s veranda.

We dismounted our horses and tied them to a hitching rail before making our way inside. Kylan grabbed a torch on the wall and pivoted to me.

“Can I have a light?” he asked.

“Of course.” I flicked a small flame from my fingertips to the torch.

“One down, fifty to go,” he said, walking into the dark room. With my heightened eyesight, I could see the torches lined up against the walls.

“I guess this will be my warmup,” I said, flexing my fingers.

Making my way out into the center of the arena, I called fire and threw my flame, one by one, lighting the torches until the entire arena was lit.

This training center was amazing, filled with everything a soldier or guard would need to train. Against one of the far walls was training equipment—wooden swords, shields, bows and arrows, axes, dummies made from hay, and lots more.

The center of the arena was manicured grass and along the outside was dirt.

“Oh, I see where I’m going,” Sabine said, heading for a bunch of hay. She’d brought a blanket that was already wrapped tightly around her. “It’s so cold in here.”

Not far from her new bed of hay were stacks of wood.

I headed toward Markus and Brone, who were chatting. “Can we make a small fire for Sabine?” I asked. “She must be freezing.”

Markus and Brone were on it. They easily picked up the wood and created a small fire pit directly in front of Sabine, but far enough away her haystack wouldn’t catch fire. As soon as they were done, I lit it.

“You guys are the best,” Sabine yawned, curling up on the hay. “I’ll see you all later.”

“Hey, I thought we were a team?” I teased.

“We are,” she said, throwing her arm up in the air. “Go team!”

I laughed out loud. She was a good friend just for showing up.

“So, what are we doing first?” I questioned, returning to the center of the arena where everyone else stood.

“Are you able to manipulate more than one element at a time?” Nicolae asked, coming to stand next to me.

I shrugged. “I don’t know. I haven’t tried yet.”

“How about we start slow,” Kai said, standing on the opposite side of me. He had set out a few hay dummies about fifty yards away. “See that water barrel over there?” He pointed to the left about twenty feet away. “Send water daggers toward that hay man, aiming for the chest and head.”

That sounded simple enough. Everyone stepped back behind me and stayed silent. I closed my eyes and concentrated on my water gift. Opening my eyes, I raised my left palm and water from the barrel came toward me.
